Problem:

Enhancing Educator Capacity for Metacognitive Learning

Nord Anglia Education recognised the need to embed structured metacognitive practices in classrooms to improve student reflection, self-regulation, and ownership of learning. However, teachers, principals, and senior leaders required clear training, practical tools, and professional support to implement these strategies effectively.

 

This initiative was part of the Nord Anglia Metacognition Research Project, developed in collaboration with Boston College, to systematically integrate metacognition into teaching and leadership practices.

Solution:

Targeted Professional Learning for Educators

Metacognition—or, in its simplest terms, thinking about thinking—helps learners develop self-awareness, reflection, and independent learning strategies. This project trained educators, principals, and senior leaders in 68+ schools to embed metacognitive practices, improving student engagement and self-regulation through structured reflection tools, visible thinking strategies, and competency-based learning frameworks.

Participants learned to lead and implement metacognitive strategies at multiple levels, using digital and physical portfolios to track progress and encourage deeper student ownership of learning. By equipping school leadership teams with these tools, the programme ensured system-wide impact, cultural shift, and long-term sustainability.
